Collapse ▲Hurricane Idalia will be approaching North Carolina soon. Please remain alert and aware of possible floods, strong winds, tornadoes and power outages. While Idalia is projected to be a tropical storm by the time that it reaches eastern North Carolina, the potential for heavy rainfall and flooding is a significant concern.
Flooding is a leading cause of deaths during and after tropical systems. Fortunately, many of these deaths can be prevented. Please be aware and follow flood safety guidelines.
- Never walk, swim or drive though floodwater. Floodwater can easily knock you over or carry a vehicle away. Floodwaters also conceal hidden dangers such as debris or even a completely washed out roadway. Always comply with road closure and other caution signage. Turn around – Don’t Drown.
- Water may rise quickly. Stay away from floodwaters and avoid flood-prone areas. Move to higher ground before flooding occurs in these areas.
- Floodwater may be contaminated with sewage or even chemicals that can make you sick. Avoid contact with floodwater.
- Do not consume foods that may have come in contact with floodwaters. For more information on dealing with food after a flood, consult the Safe Food After a Flood publication.
- Always stay alert and follow instructions from local emergency officials.
