Collapse ▲This past year, a survey of all North Carolina Cotton Gins was conducted. The purpose of this survey was to learn more about how cotton byproducts are managed and marketed throughout the state. Whole cottonseed is an excellent feed resource. It can be an economical source of protein, fat, and fiber in cattle diets. Cotton gin byproduct (or cotton gin trash) can be an economical roughage source and has a nutritional value similar to that of low-quality hay. Out of the thirty-four gins in North Carolina, twenty-five responded to the survey. We found that 100% of respondents either already sell cottonseed or would consider selling cottonseed locally to cattle producers. We also found that 95% of respondents either already sell cotton gin byproduct or are interested in selling it locally to cattle producers. In response to these results, a directory of cotton gins interested in selling cotton byproducts locally was created. This directory is meant to connect cattle producers who are interested in feeding some of these cotton byproducts to cotton gins interested in selling these byproducts.
